Uganda is a beautiful, landlocked country in eastern Africa with a population of over 33,000,000. It is bordered by Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Kenya, Sudan and Tanzania. There are many lakes and a number of National Parks home to a variety of plant and animal species. Independence from Britain was achieved in 1962. Since the 1990s relative stability and economic growth has been brought to Uganda through non-party and presidential elections.

Here are just a few of the shocking statistics that Mwenya Uganda is working to change:

  • Life expectancy at birth for men is 49; for women it is 51
  • 13.4% of children will die under the age of 5, 6% of whom will not see their 1st birthday.
  • There are only 100 dental surgeons in Uganda – 80 of who work in Kampala. That’s 100 surgeons for nearly 34,000,000 people.
  • A woman will have on average 6.7 children in her lifetime.
  • The adult HIV prevalence rate is 5.4%, the fourteenth highest in the world.
  • Literacy is 66.8% and the average child will leave school aged 10.
  • 35% of Ugandans survive on less than one $1 a day (2200 Uganda shillings). Most private dental clinics in rural areas charge between 8,000-10,000 Uganda shillings to extract a tooth. This amount is what many people in rural areas in Uganda use for their survival for at least a week, others a month.

There is a huge lack of research on dental services in Uganda. Mwenya Uganda will record all findings and publish them on the website in order to highlight the need for dental care and education.
