Our Ethos
Health
We believe that health is not just about the physical functioning of the body. Being in good health, we believe, has five interrelated and interdependent aspects; physical, spiritual, emotional, economic and social. Through all our projects, we aim to improve health as a holistic five-pronged concept not just through medical and dental care.

Volunteer
Providing Ugandans with an opportunity to volunteer their time and skills not only has enormous benefits for the beneficiaries, it can also improve the volunteers' lives considerably.
Mwenya Uganda is like a family and when people become members of Mwenya, they are welcomed to the team with open arms, providing not only an opportunity to help others, but an opportunity for social inclusion and professional progression for the volunteer themselves.

"Before [volunteering with] Mwenya, I did not want to talk to any one I didn't know, which made me fail to socialise with different kinds of people from different destinations. After entering Mwenya I learnt networking skills and this opened my expectations. Since I was made Youth Director, I developed confidence in myself and I make sure that I attend any youth forum organised by the state or local authorities. I have also changed my emotional feeling towards the others - especially towards vulnerable people, I make sure that I take care of whoever I can. I have had so many experiences [with Mwenya] I have learnt to be transparent financially which is a great resource in my business. I have also accepted that if you don't know something, leave it for others to complete so that you can learn and understand. Thanks to Mwenya, I feel happy in my heart every day. I wish to stay with Mwenya forever so I continue having lots and lots of experiences." (Kabanda Mstapher)
Ugandan-run
Mwenya was Jhon's dream. It is only right that a Ugandan NGO is run by Ugandan people. Mwenya Uganda has been an enormous learning curve and after nearly three years of working together, we have learned that the most effective way of grassroots community development is by exchanging ideas across the world and finding culturally sensitive ways to implement our combined ideas. The UK team are there to facilitate the Ugandan team, not to lead. Mwenya would like to shine light on the enormous amount of work that African volunteers are doing across the continent and be a leading example to help show that everyone can help others.

- "My dad died when I was 3 years old and I was then registered with an orphanage. I got a foreign sponsor who supported me up to primary 7. The organisation collapsed and I didn't even get my sponsors contact. I sat at home for two years then from no where, a Ugandan man who owned a school came to me. We had an interaction and after three days he took me to his school and I began school life. After that school I went to Kampala and joined karaoke group, we danced and mimed in club to earn a living, then from there a neighbour heard I had performed well, he just took me to his home and made sure i got back to school. I completed school and university and started working as a dentist. I think that life experience is enough for me me to sweat with one tooth or work with old people who can't help themselves at no cost" (Rajabu Nabulika, Mwenya Uganda member and Dentist)
