The Story
In December 2012, Jhon our volunteering Ugandan Director and Dentist, thought he had lost his job. His boss told him she was moving to New Zealand and was planning to sell the clinic that Jhon managed. This building was also the location for Mwenya's office. The whole team thought Mwenya's future was severely threatened.
Within a week period of receiving this news, Mwenya Uganda won a grant from Bristol University Alumni Foundation which covered the costs of Mwenya taking over the clinic for the next three years. Jhon had his job back, the Mwenya office location was saved and we had our first social enterprise which would start bringing in income for project work. We would like to say a sincere thank you to Bristol University Alumni Foundation, your generous grant could not have come at a better moment and has played such an integral part in securing Mwenya's ongoing development.
With some very basic equipment from Dentaid, and a very shabby old chair, we have been able to cover all the administration and running costs of Mwenya Uganda with the profits from the clinic. We raise approximately £100 in net profit every month thanks to this clinic but we know that we can raise much more. This money is used to provide treatment and basic necessities to our 12 orphans and 13 elderly members of the community.
We strive to provide the best treatment possible with the equipment we have, but currently it is far from satisfactory.
Our project for this year is to totally refurbish the clinic to be able to provide high quality treatment to everybody. This will infinately improve the experience for our patients and it will also increase the profits of the clinic, meaning Mwenya will be able to offer treatment to more beneficiaries.
With the current material, we will open a second dental clinic in an area with no access to dental care.
